A monofilament is a type of wig cap construction upon which a fine layer of transparent micro-mesh is inserted either at the parting, crown or top area. Each strand of hair in then individually hand tied to this layer of mesh to mimic natural hair growth.
Monofilament wigs, often refereed to as 'medical wigs', were introduced in early 1998 to help those suffering from severe or total hair loss due to medical illness. Today, monofilament wigs continue to be at the cutting edge of wig cap design, attracting those with thinning hair and sensitive scalps.
As the hairs in monofilament wigs are attached to a transparent layer of mesh, the wearer's scalp is visible. This design feature creates the illusion that the hair growing directly from the scalp, resulting in a more realistic and naturally gorgeous style.
